Scientific research that has been published discusses the effects of wireless technologies like 2G, 3G, and 4G, which are currently in use in our cell phones, computers, and wearable devices. This research indicates that the radiofrequency exposures from these technologies pose a significant health risk to humans, animals, and the environment. Scientists are emphasizing the need to conduct research on the potential health effects of 5G before its widespread implementation in order to protect the public and the environment.
“Small cells” refer to microwave antennas that are being rapidly installed in public areas on utility poles and street lights, near homes, parks, and schools. Similar to traditional cell towers, these wireless antennas emit microwave radiofrequency (RF) radiation to transmit signals for 2G, 3G, and 4G networks. Companies are planning to introduce 5G, which will utilize higher frequencies, including millimeter-wave emissions that have not been previously released in public areas.
Companies claim that these 4G and 5G antennas will significantly increase the levels of wireless radiation in the area. They are seeking to relax radiation limits imposed by several governments to facilitate the rollout of these technologies. A study conducted in 2021 found that people exposed to higher radiation levels experienced more severe headaches, dizziness, nightmares, and reduced sleep duration.
Over 240 scientists have appealed to the United Nations, urging a reduction in public exposure to RF radiation and advocating for a moratorium on 5G due to “established” adverse biological effects. Peer-reviewed research has linked wireless radiofrequency radiation to various negative impacts, such as brain cancer, breast cancer, DNA damage, thyroid cancer, memory damage, sperm damage, brain damage, headaches, diabetes, hyperactivity, liver damage, oxidative stress, behavior problems, altered brain activity, tumor promotion, impaired growth, and more.
The implementation of 5G will involve not only the frequencies currently used but also higher millimeter wave and sub-millimeter wave frequencies. Small cells installed in cities generally operate on 4G technology with a range of frequencies. Therefore, when assessing the health effects of 5G and small cells, it is essential to consider research conducted on existing technologies and frequencies, as well as studies focusing on sub-millimeter and millimeter waves. Although there are no long-term studies specifically investigating human exposure to 5G, the existing body of research on the effects of current wireless technology provides sufficient evidence for scientists to call for a moratorium.
